General Surgeon Awards


Major James D. Putnam distinguished himself by meritorious service while serving as General Surgeon, 96th Surgical Operations Squadron, 96th Medical Group, 96th Air Base Wing, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. During this period, the outstanding professional skill, leadership and ceaseless efforts of Major Putnam resulted in major contributions to the surgical capabilities at Eglin Air Force Base. Major Putnam performed more than 200 surgeries and managed over a thousand outpatient visits, generating 500,000.00 dollars in revenue. His surgical skills were critical in the rapid mobilization of the operating room, blood bank, and intensive care unit, and saving the life of a hemorrhaging patient. In addition, Major Putnam deployed to Balad Air Base, Iraq, in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM, where he excelled as a combat surgeon, cared for 225 casualties, supported 200 trauma cases, and saved lives and limbs. He directly contributed to the Outstanding rating by the Joint Commision on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization's inspection in 2009. Furthermore, Major Putnam was hand picked to deploy to Haiti, in support of OPERATION UNIFIED RESPONSE where he served as sole land based general surgeon for United States personnel. He established a mobile field surgical facility from where he orchestrated 120 Aeromedical Evacuation missions, transporting 498 patients, and providing intensive care and surgical treatment for earthquake trauma victims. The distinctive accomplishments of Major Putnam reflect credit upon himself, the 96th Surgical Operations Squadron, and the United States Air Force.




Major Cheryl O. Parshall distinguished herself in the performance of outstanding service to the United States as General Surgeon, 56th Medical Operations Squadron, 56th Medical Group, Luke Air Force Base, Arizona from 12 July 2010 to 14 July 2014. During this period, Major Parshall performed over 775 surgical procedures, saving the Air Force Medical Service more than 1.1 million dollars in outsourced medical care. Her expert care was instrumental in the 56th Medical Group earning AETC Best Clinic in 2010, 2011, and 2012 and #1 in AETC for patient satisfaction in 2009 and 2010. Major Parshall deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where she provided triage, evaluation, resucitation, and surgical care for over 250 wounded warriors and local civilians. An experienced combat medic, she trained eight resident level physicians, 15 Afghani National Army medics, and 30 Role two hospital personnel in combat trauma, increasing survivability under fire. Additionally, she executed over 120 unscheduled procedures and 150 minor clinical procedures, helping the 56th Fighter Wing garner an "Excellent" and the 56th Medical Group an "Outstanding" during the 2011 Unit Compliance Inspection and Health Services Inspection. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Major Parshall reflect great credit upon herself, the 56th Medical Operations Squadron and the United States Air Force.
